At West River Academy, we love seeing families come together around a shared belief: that children learn best when they are free to explore, create, and follow their curiosity. Every summer, a wonderful example of this takes place in Serbia. Marko Popovic, admin of our WRA group School in Nature, shared photos and stories from this year’s gathering, and we are delighted to pass them on to you. <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n

From July 8 to 15, more than 120 people gathered in a spot away from the city, with plenty of room for everyone and, most importantly, a place that is good for children. Families came from all over Serbia and Bosnia, and one family traveled from Russia. The gathering also welcomes families from North Macedonia, Kosovo, and Montenegro, and it grows a little more every year. Marko expects at least 300 people next year.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n

Hands in the Clay<\/h3>\n

Each group had a new activity every day. There were clay art and clay painting workshops, a birdhouse workshop, a cooking workshop, and a master workshop. Children shaped, pressed, and painted their own creations, from little animals to colorful hearts.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n

Mornings of Tea and Plants<\/h3>\n

Every morning began with making tea and learning about plants. Workshops on cooking, herbs, teas, and compotes filled the days, including a medicinal herb gathering workshop led by Marko himself.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n

Caves, Pools, and Campfires<\/h3>\n

The days were full of movement. The group visited a nearby cave, where the children sang a beautiful song they had learned at camp. When an activity was a friendly competition, the children were rewarded with a swim in a large pool. Evenings ended around the fire, roasting corn and other dishes together.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n

Friendships That Last<\/h3>\n

For the children, it was a week of making new friends. For the adults, it was a chance to share and learn, too. In Marko’s words, “It was truly beautiful and unforgettable.”<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n
