Un camino de graduados hacia el autodescubrimiento

Los estudiantes del Programa de Graduación de la Academia West River son un verdadero testimonio de la filosofía de que hay belleza en la diversidad. Los adultos jóvenes con los que nos cruzamos han aprendido que está bien chocar contra las paredes, cuestionar tu identidad y sentirte imperfecto. Porque lo que aprendes de eso es cómo recuperarte, ser auténtico y aceptar tu singularidad.

Marta Chan es una joven excepcional en nuestra Clase del Programa de Graduación de 2018. En una de sus asignaciones de informes mensuales, reflexiona sobre un viaje a Finlandia, su crecimiento en Estonia y su viaje hacia el autodescubrimiento.

"La vida es increible. Y luego es horrible. Y luego es increíble de nuevo. Y entre lo asombroso y lo horrible, es ordinario, mundano y rutinario... ¡Y es impresionantemente hermoso!”. LR Knost ha logrado poner en palabras la descripción de cómo fue este mes para mí.

Aprendí una vez más, que a veces las cosas simplemente no salen como las planeaste. Pensé que ya había aprendido esta lección, pero este mes demostró que estaba equivocado. Nada parecía salir como yo quería. Estaba realmente molesto e irritado. Pero luego, comencé a notar todas estas pequeñas cosas maravillosas e inesperadas que sucedieron en mi vida. Me di cuenta de cómo a veces me apresuro a terminar todo y olvido la razón por la que estoy haciendo estas cosas en primer lugar. Escribir mis pensamientos y sentimientos en mi diario realmente me ayudó a encontrar algo de serenidad y paz mental.

Una cosa que estuvo constantemente en mi mente este mes fue el origen chino de mi padre y su ascendencia. Es un desafío para mí hacer la historia familiar desde su punto de vista, porque no hablo ni cantonés ni chino mandarín. Estoy aprendiendo esto último, pero es bastante difícil. No es tanto el idioma lo que es difícil de aprender sino la noción y la cultura del pueblo chino. A medida que he aprendido más sobre su cultura y tradiciones, he reconocido partes de ella en mí mismo. Sé que mis padres dieron y aún dan lo mejor de sí mismos para criarnos a mí y a mis hermanos y estoy muy agradecido por ellos, porque me han permitido y alentado a convertirme en la mejor de mí. Pero a veces siento que estoy desconectado de la “parte” china de mí. Cuando era más joven, siempre traté de convencer a los demás (y a mí mismo) de que soy un “verdadero estonio”. Y recuerdo estar tan molesto cuando alguien señalaba que soy "mitad chino", porque me hacía sentir como si estuviera incompleto y, por lo tanto, insuficiente. Pero con el tiempo me di cuenta de que eso no es cierto. Más que tratar de definirme, aprendí a conocerme. ¿Quien soy? ¿Quién y qué amo? ¿Cuáles son mis miedos, mis talentos, mis pasiones? ¿Qué hago para cumplir mis sueños? Estas son las cosas que importan. Estas son las cosas que me completan. No perfecto, lejos de eso. Pero completo.

Aprendí que si llegamos a aceptarnos como somos, eso nos ayuda a avanzar y mejorar. La belleza de ser humanos es que tenemos tanto la capacidad como el poder de mejorarnos a nosotros mismos. Nuestros antecedentes y situaciones no juegan un papel importante en esto. Nuestra actitud sí. Mi querido abuelo me dijo una vez: “Una mala actitud es como una rueda pinchada. No puedes conducir el coche a ninguna parte hasta que lo cambies. Y si lo cambias, puedes ir a donde tu corazón desee”. Estoy de acuerdo con él.

El veinticuatro de febrero marcó oficialmente el centenario de la República de Estonia. Esto me dio nuevamente una razón para sumergirme en la historia de mi familia y celebrar a las personas que construyeron este país. Sus sacrificios y diligencia en las adversidades no dejan de asombrarme e impresionarme.

Toda el agua eran bloques de hielo bastante asimétricos. ¡Finlandia es realmente bonita! ¡Tienen muchos lagos (alrededor de 168 000) y un sinfín de bosques boreales deshabitados! Pero nuestra primera prioridad era visitar el Templo de Helsinki, Finlandia. Creo que es (junto con el resto de los 159 templos en funcionamiento que tiene nuestra Iglesia) un lugar sagrado y la casa de Dios. Fue maravilloso visitarlo y realmente me hizo apreciar todo lo que se ha creado, incluso más que antes. El tiempo allí también me dio la oportunidad de rebobinar todo lo que ha estado sucediendo en mi vida últimamente y dirigirme de regreso a donde quiero estar. En conclusión, este mes principalmente me analicé y estudié a mí mismo. Como dijo el antiguo filósofo griego Aristóteles: “Conocerse a uno mismo es el comienzo de toda sabiduría”.
